Mumbai photojournalist gang-raped: one arrested, four accused identified, say police

Mumbai: There is outrage in the country during the horrific assault on a 22 year old photojournalist, who was raped by five men on Thursday night during a mission in the grounds of the Shakti factory in Lower Parel, the South Mumbai.

Police arrested a man who they confessed and also identified four others, which are expected to be arrested soon.

The young woman at the Jaslok hospital, where a doctor said tonight that she had suffered internal and external injuries, but is stable and not in intensive care. She underwent an inquiry procedure this morning and was "doing well", even if it is "a little depressed," said the doctor.
Photojournalist detailed statement to the police and that of a male colleague who was with her, identified the accused in a few hours, the head of the Mumbai police said.

The young woman, who works with a magazine in the city, went to the mill isolated click photographs compound. She was accosted by two men shortly after she and her colleague entered the compound 18 hours.

The men were beaten and tied to his colleague with a belt, before taking turns to rape her with three other people who joined.

The woman fell unconscious and regained consciousness only about 20 hours. The attackers had fled by then. Photojournalist and his colleague informed their workplace and then took a taxi to the Jaslok hospital, four kilometers. Doctors have called the police.

The audacity of the crime stunned the city. Shakti Mills compound is isolated, but it is in the middle of Mumbai. It has a very busy road, just 50 meters. At 6:30 pm, it was still daylight.

Citizens, activists and journalists gathered in Hutatama Chowk in South Mumbai in a silent protest. In Parliament, opposition MPs attacked the Congress, which excludes both in Maharashtra and at the Centre over the rising crime against women in the country.

Little seems to have changed since last December, when a 23 year old medical student was brutally raped by six men in a moving bus in Delhi. She died 13 days later. The horrific attack has caused protests and demands for better protection of women and more strict laws against rape at the national level.
